Pacific Grove Golf Links Returning to Its Roots

Pebble Beach Golf Links isn’t the only local course returning to more of its original look.

Just outside the Del Monte Forest, Pacific Grove Golf Links has been undergoing a restoration focusing on the removal of ice plant and the reconditioning of many of the course’s bunkers. Like much of Pebble’s recent changes, the goal at P.G. is to make the course play more as it was originally intended.
“This restoration works hand-in-hand with our vision to improve the overall aesthetic appeal and playability of the golf course,” said superintendent Daniel Gho. “Over the course of nearly 80 years, the sand from bunker shots has accumulated around the greens, changing the characteristics of the original design that architects H. Chandler Egan and Jack Neville had in mind. We are returning the bunkers to their original design and condition.”
In restoring the bunkers, each will be top dressed with G8 sand, a washed sand that is whiter in color and more consistent. Other work includes a tree planting program that will serve to frame some of the holes and replace those that have fallen during storms.
“Our goal is to preserve the classic design of this wonderful course,” said Gho, who is aiming to have the restoration complete prior to Pebble hosting the U.S. Open. “We want our guests to walk off the course knowing they have experienced something special. We want them to experience golf as it should be.”
Pacific Grove GL first opened in 1932, 13 years after Pebble Beach Golf Links. Egan and Neville had a hand in designing both.
