“Pebble Beach: The Official Golf History” Book a Gem

Back in 2005, Pebble Beach Company historian Neal Hotelling broke down the history of Pebble Beach Golf Links in the appropriately named book, ‘Pebble Beach Golf Links: The Official History.’

Four years and more digging later, Hotelling now presents us with even more history in his new book, ‘Pebble Beach: The Official Golf History.’ Unlike his first book, which was a running history focusing on Pebble Beach Golf Links, the new book focuses more on the regional and major golf championships that have been played on all the courses the Pebble Beach Co. has at one time or another had a role in–Pebble Beach Golf Links, Del Monte GC, The Links at Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill, Peter Hay GC, Cypress Point Club and Monterey Peninsula Country Club.

Combining historical facts and photos and photography from Joann Dost, the book is as spectacular as the courses themselves.
According to Hotelling, some of his favorite finds include the fact that the LPGA Tour once played at Pebble Beach Golf Links (The Weathervane was held there both in 1950 and 1951), a photo of a young Amy Alcott competing in the 1973 California Women’s Amateur Championship and a photo of Dudley Wysong playing in the 1961 U.S. Amateur. In the photo of Wysong, he’s playing his second shot on No.8 from the fairway of No.6 after a horrendous drive. Remarkably, Wysong nevertheless saved par and won the hole.
“There was still a lot of golf history that wasn’t recorded and couldn’t really be fit into the first book,” Hotelling said. “One of the reasons I write is because I want a convenient place where I can look things up. I can’t remember it all.”
